African-American Landmarks Initiative

As a part of its 75th Anniversary campaign in 2012,  The Landmark Society launched an African American Landmarks Initiative to identify little known or non-traditional sites associated with the African-American community in the Rochester area and thereby inspire residents and attract investment. Late that year, the Landmark Society received $50,000 in funding from the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council and NYSCA, and a diverse task force was formed to pursue this work.

Following three public listening sessions in 2013, several target locations were chosen and grant funds were directed for a feasibility study by Clark Patterson Lee, which included cost estimates, use/reuse ideas, branding / place-making / streetscaping concepts.

Millard Latimer Funeral Home on S. Plymouth Avenue is Rochester’s oldest African-American owned business.
