The Tour Neighborhood
The Beach Avenue neighborhood in Rochester’s Charlotte lakefront area is one of the city’s most distinctive residential streets—an intimate enclave of historic homes, lush gardens, and sweeping views of Lake Ontario. Tucked just beyond the more active waterfront, it offers a quiet elegance that feels both timeless and gently removed from the rhythms of the city.
For visitors on the 2026 House & Garden Tour, Beach Avenue provides a rare glimpse into Rochester’s coastal character and layered architectural heritage. Once part of a thriving late 19th- and early 20th-century resort destination, the neighborhood still reflects its origins, with homes designed to capture lake breezes, light, and views through expansive porches and generous windows.
Unlike much of Rochester’s urban grid, Beach Avenue has a secluded, village-like atmosphere. Mature trees frame the street, while thoughtfully maintained gardens soften the lakeshore landscape. The Rochester Secret Sidewalk runs discreetly along the waterfront behind the homes, offering a unique perspective of both the lake and the neighborhood’s rear façades and gardens.
The Rochester Secret Sidewalk is a short, roughly eight-minute walk, though many visitors linger to enjoy the views. It is reserved for foot traffic only; bicycles and scooters are not permitted, and visitors are asked to remain on the designated path and respect adjacent private property.
Visitors often remark that Beach Avenue feels like a “slice of coastal New England,” with its elegant lakefront homes and cohesive streetscape.
Nearby Ontario Beach Park offers ample free parking in large lots and on surrounding streets, generally available daily from morning through late evening. The main parking area is off Lake Avenue, with additional options near the marina.
Together, this blend of history, architecture, and atmosphere makes Beach Avenue a standout highlight of the tour—and a compelling expression of Rochester’s rich architectural legacy.
