Landmark Travels: Brandywine Valley and a Longwood Christmas

This fabulous tour took place in December 2023.
December is the perfect month for holiday shopping, festive decorations – and garden tours. That is, if the garden is Longwood Gardens with it’s massive greenhouses and acres of over 500,000 incredible holiday lights. We’ll travel to the historic Brandywine Valley which transverses southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. We’ll enjoy 4 days of special holiday exhibits, expansive historic homes, and art museums.
Trip Highlights:
- A full evening at Longwood Gardens, to enjoy the spectacular light displays and horticultural exhibits. Plenty of indoor spaces to warm up – or there’s always the hot chocolate stands (with or without schnapps!)
- Winterthur – a stunning mansion with the most significant American Decorative Arts collection in the world. Special Exhibition: Jackie Kennedy’s wedding dress designer, Ann Lowe, was a sought-after dressmaker to elite East Coast families—like the Rockefellers, Du Ponts, and Roosevelts—for bespoke bridal and debutante gowns. Lowe was born into a family of African American dressmakers, learned dressmaking from her mother and grandmother.
- Brandywine River Art Museum Renowned for its holdings of the Wyeth family of artists, housed in a renovated 19th century mill with a dramatic glass and steel addition overlooking the Brandywine River.
- Odessa, Delaware – one of the most pristine Colonial townscapes, with a National Register District, a National Historic Landmark and two National Parks Service Network to Freedom sites.
