SUMMARY:Poet's Garden & Birthday Cake
DESCRIPTION:The New York Upstate Chapter of ASLA and the Highland Park Conservancy have partnered for a celebration of Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday in Highland Park on Thursday April 26\, 2012. Olmsted designed Rochester’s magnificent parks system (including Highland Park)\, Central Park in NYC\, and hundreds of other parks\, campuses\, and residential grounds around the nation. In addition to creating a plethora of scenic spaces for the enjoyment of the public\, Olmsted’s designs and practices created a model for the profession of landscape architecture. Come out to Highland Park and celebrate Olmsted’s legacy. 6:15 p.m. - Meet at Lamberton Conservatory - Landscape architects will meet to pick up Public Awareness Campaign material and canvas the park. They will chalk sidewalks\, plant lawn signs\, pass out informational flyers\, and ask park visitors to join them for the garden walk and (free) birthday cake. 7:00 p.m. – Meet at Poet’s Garden – Local Master Gardeners will lead a tour of the Poet’s Garden\, followed by cake in celebration of Olmsted’s Birthday. Free and open to the public! Click here to join the event on Facebook. This event is free and open to the public. Participants are welcome to take part in all or some of the events listed above.

SUMMARY:Lilac Festival at Ellwanger Garden
DESCRIPTION:While you're exploring the lilacs at Highland Park\, escape the crowds and stroll over to the Ellwanger Garden on Mt. Hope Avenue. The Ellwanger Garden will be open daily during Lilac Festival\, May 11-20\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Suggested donation: $5 What’s the Lilac Festival Connection? The altruism of George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry changed the face of Rochester. Their gift of 20 choice acres prodded the city to form the Parks Department in 1888. The 20 acres were the start of Highland Park\, location of the world famous “Lilac Festival” each May. They also gave vast numbers of trees and donated two specimens of every variety of plant in their nursery to the Park. They planted many of the majestic trees that grace our city today. The success of the Rochester nursery trade\, as exemplified by the Mt. Hope Nursery\, earned Rochester the title “The Flower City.” The Lilac Festival maintains the heritage of that name\, and Ellwanger Garden gives you the chance to experience the inspiration of that heritage. photo by Laura Zavala

SUMMARY:Public Hearing - Landmark designation of 13 Cataract St.
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 4 a joint hearing of the City of Rochester Preservation Board and Planning Commission will consider the application for landmark designation of 13 Cataract Street. The hearing will begin at 8 PM at City Hall\, 30 Church St. Those arriving prior to 8 PM are asked to gather in the atrium. Because the landmark application was not filed by the owners of the property\, approval of designation requires a 3/4 majority from both the Preservation Board and the Planning Commission. The applicant will present testimony first\, followed by the property owner. Members of the public in support of the application will then be allowed to present testimony\, followed by those in opposition to the application. See the City of Rochester Preservation Board website for more information and an official agenda. Interested members of the public are encouraged to attend.

SUMMARY:April Fools Tour at Stone-Tolan
DESCRIPTION:A rustic 19th century kitchen complete with an open hearth – and a plate of sushi? A beautiful 19th century canopied bed\, with a chamber pot peeking out from under the bed – next to a pair of flip flops? Join us for the 2nd annual April Fools Tour at the Stone-Tolan Historic Site. The “April Fools” have visited Stone-Tolan – and have really messed things up for the museum staff! There are all sorts of things in there that don’t belong – and we need the public’s help to figure it out. The tour will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 per adult. For this event\, children up to age 16 are welcome free of charge. Adults and kids will hunt for things that are out of place in the 200 year old rooms\, including the tavern room\, kitchen\, parlor bedroom\, hallway and pantry. Some may be obvious – like the sushi. Others will be a bit more challenging (hint: what is the date on that coin?) You’ll get a sheet to record their discoveries. After your hunt is done\, take your completed sheet to the education center in the late 19th century Tolan barn. You’ll score your results\, see how many you got right – and discover what you missed. There will be prizes! The April Fools Tour will take place on this one day only. After all\, we’ll need to get everything back to its appropriate\, historically correct settings in time for the spring school tours!

SUMMARY:Walk the Walk - Public Performance
DESCRIPTION:Walk The Walk teaches about our shared heritage. Austin Steward never gave up on his dream of owning his own shop. Despite great obstacles he faced\, including threats and bullying\, the former slave became successful businessman and the proud proprietor of one of the finest meat markets in town. Many have heard the name of Frederick Douglass\, but did you know he was a world traveler? He crossed the globe\, speaking to heads of state and kings. Yet despite his stature\, his wife Anna struggled daily for equal treatment while home raising their family. And George Brown was once bought and sold like property for $1\,450. This incredible man also served his country in the Civil War\, and actually fought on both sides of the conflict! Each of these folks - some of Rochester's most remarkable citizens - helped to pave the way on the long road towards equal rights for all people. Come join us as they return to the city they made home to entertain\, educate and inspire during Walk the Walk: Encounters with Rochester’s African-American Ancestors. Now in its 15th year\, Walk the Walk is offered to the public during a single performance only\, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church\, 141 Adams Street\, Rochester. The public performance will take place Friday evening\, February 10th at 7 PM. Information for Teachers: School-specific performances that meet NYS Learning Standards are scheduled for for the mornings of February 9 & 10 at the Hochstein Music School. These performances are for children in grades 3 and higher. These performances include one-on-one chats and interaction between the student audience and the “Ancestors\,” and help educators bring to life the difficult decisions faced by their historical predecessors. Walk the Walk is also aligned with the District’s emphasis on English and Social Studies partnerships. Students experience local history in a literary context. *The program supports NYS social studies learning standards (1\, 2) English Language Arts (1\, 2\, 3 and 4) and Arts (1\, 3.) Pre and post visit student materials will also be provided. Walk the Walk (Pen) Pals Program A pen pal program is a great way to help your students improve writing\, editing and communication skills. It also encourages the student to increase their self-awareness. Introducing oneself to a pen pal in a written letter gives the student practice in assessing him or herself\, a tool that is used throughout one’s life in job or college applications. Pen pal programs help students learn about a world outside their own classroom\, school and home neighborhood. With the Walk the Walk (Pen) Pals Program\, your students and their pen pals will share the common experience of preparing for this unique program - and the excitement of actually meeting their Pal at the event! Download the registration form with more information. For additional questions call Cindy Boyer at 585-546-7029 x12 or email cboyer@landmarksociety.org.
