 Ghost Walk

The 2010 Ghost Walk will be held October 22, 23, 29 and 30th. More details to come!

2009 Ghost Walk information:

This Halloween, there's really only one question to ask:

Who was Annie Keily and why was she left ...in pieces?

The answer to this gruesome question, as well as many more true history-based tales from the less-rosy side of Rochester's past, can be discovered at The Landmark Society Ghost Walk on Oct. 16, 17, 23 and 24.

• Discover what secret military project resulted in the loss of 11 lives in East Rochester.

• Ponder what is in that mysterious burlap bag ...do you really want to know?

•Discover what terrible things happened when the professional photographer tried to photograph the dead.

Yes, it's all real Rochester history ... just the darker side.

More details on The Landmark Society Ghost Walk:

The Landmark Society Ghost Walk is a play, right? There are different scenes and acts. There are actors, each one bringing out the nuances of their role with convincing charm, touching pathos, or entertaining humor. There are wonderful costumes, giving visual clues to the story. There are props and lights – and there is an audience.

Wait…isn’t The Landmark Society Ghost Walk a guided tour? There are tour guides, each carrying a candle lit lantern. There is a tour route, with “tour stop” signs. There are beautiful historic homes, picturesque landscaping and even historic slate sidewalks. And there are tour groups....

Truth be told, The Landmark Society Ghost Walk on Oct. 16, 17, 23 & 24 is the wonderful blend of both! You’ll experience the drama, excitement and entertainment of a night at the theatre, all while enjoying a stroll through the autumn leaves on a beautiful October night. At each stop on your walk, the actors will perform their scene from the front door or porch of an architecturally-significant home.

While you are waiting your turn for a tour inside the lovely historic sanctuary of The Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word, you’ll be entertained by trivia contests, a little local history – and a special treat. Readers from Writers and Books will put us all in a proper Landmark Society Ghost Walk mood with readings from Edgar Allen Poe! This is just one activity that Writers and Books is holding as part of the celebration of The Big Read, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.

For those who dare, tours embark from (NEW LOCATION!) The Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word, 597 East Avenue, every 10 minutes from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 16, 17, 23 & 24, 2009. Lantern-bearing guides lead participants under the cloak of darkness to each performance then back to the church for Halloween refreshments and a boutique bursting with scary trinkets.

Available at the event and online is Ghost Walk: Chilling Tales from Rochester NY's Past, a collection of the best stories from the first 10 years of Ghost Walk performances. This 152-page paperback resurrects the life and times of 19th century Rochester, from grave robbery and cholera epidemics to industrial disasters and unsolved murders. Author Cindy Boyer will be on hand to sign copies.

The Landmark Society Ghost Walk is one of our most popular events, and frequently sells out. Tickets will go on sale mid-September. Tickets are $15 in advance – members may purchase discounted tickets of $10 in advance. If available, tickets will be $18 at the door. If you are coming with a group of 8 or more, call us at 546-7029 x15 and ask about a group tour time reservation.
