Cobblestone School is proud to announce a benefit Open House at the E. E. Boynton House, Rochester’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed residence. This amazing home is an exceptional example of the work of one of the most famous architects in the world.
The evening will include hors d’oeuvres and wine and a short presentation by Ted Lownie of Hamilton, Houston, Lownie Architects, who is partner-in-charge of the rebuilding of the Martin estates in Buffalo. Ted will be sharing his stories and images of their $50 million dollar project to rebuild three buildings that had been demolished and restore three more to their original 1907 condition, as designed by Mr. Wright. In discussing their efforts in Buffalo, Mr. Lownie will be sharing his thoughts and experiences as they may well relate to the never ending efforts to maintain and understand Rochester’s own Frank Lloyd Wright creation.
The home, built in 1908 by Edward E. Boynton of the Hamm Lantern Company of Rochester for his daughter Beulah, is beautifully preserved and exemplifies Wright’s prairie house design. It has been continuously occupied and much remains in the original condition.
Of particular interest is the dining room which contains furniture designed by Wright and built here in Rochester including two dining room tables each with a set of chairs, sideboard, serving tables, flower stands, electric light fixtures and original leaded glass in the sideboards and cabinetry. The drop ceiling includes leaded glass window panels that are located above the formal dining table.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s unique vision and organic approach to architecture shaped the way we view our homes as well as the world around us. He is a wonderful example of the creativity and trust in one’s own instincts that we strive to develop in our students. Cobblestone School is an independent, progressive elementary school located in Rochester, New York. The school was founded in 1983 by a group of teachers and parents who recognized the need for an educational alternative. While we teach the traditional disciplines of language arts, math, science, history, art and music, our methods encourage students to stretch their curiosity and imaginations, to question the status quo, and encourage a deeper pursuit of areas for which they feel a true passion. Currently, Cobblestone is the educational “home” to 96 students. This event will be open to select members of the media. For more information, call (585) 271-4548 or visit www.cobblestone.org.
