25 years at the Landmark Society - 1981-2005

Our mission is to discover, protect, and revitalize the architectural and related cultural heritage of the Rochester region, and to educate and inform our community about that heritage.
|
|
Who we are: The Landmark Society of Western New York, Inc., is one of the oldest and most active preservation organizations in America. It is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving, interpreting and fostering interest in the architectural, historical and cultural heritage of our region. The Landmark Society's service area covers nine Western New York counties.
| |
Our history: Landmark was organized in 1937, preceding by ten years the founding of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, of which it is a charter member. Helen Ellwanger led a group of volunteers in founding an organization to protect and preserve the Campbell-Whittlesey mansion. Built on this modest foundation, the Landmark Society has grown into a museum and preservation organization with a state and national reputation.
Where we're located: We're located in the historic Corn Hill section of Rochester, NY. Download a map for more information. You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this.
How we function: The Landmark Society is governed by a Board of Trustees elected for three-year terms by the general membership at the Annual Meeting in November. The board then elects its officers. It has been the custom for officers to serve a minimum of two years, although they are elected annually.
